| Recognising that slips, trips and falls account for a large number of injuries in the oil and gas industry, RBG Ltd (‘RBG’), a leading industry provider of fabric maintenance and related services, has developed a purpose-designed, environmentally friendly, safety product, designed to significantly reduce the number of incidents during maintenance and upgrade works. |
| RBG’s ‘Containment Case’ uses an industrial fire rated foam inner to safely catch and retain waste material, which would otherwise create a hazard. Typically, it would catch liquid, oil, chemical and/or metal shearing caused by operations including in-situ machining, oil and motor changes/services and maintenance programmes. |
| Upon completion, the light-weight, portable mat is sealed using a waterproof zip hood, and the contents are disposed of safely in the client’s segregation waste facility, making it an ideal replacement for drip trays, which require emptying once they have caught liquid. |
| As Jason Smith, General Manager, explains: “Last year, over 11,000 offshore workers suffered serious injuries as a result of a cut, slip, trip or fall at work.” |
| He continues: “Currently, waste is manually swept up at the end of a work scope and segregated, leaving a film of residue in the immediate area. For jobs that involve cutting, small metal fragments will land on the deck and can prove difficult and very sharp to pick up at the end of the job. Not only is this practice time consuming, but it also creates a hazardous area ideal for cuts, slips or other such LTI. Our new Containment Case eradicates this practice, creates a safer workplace and ultimately reduces the number of LTIs.” |
| The materials utilised within the Containment Case have a lifespan of 12 to 15 years and do not degrade with exposure to direct sunlight, seawater or salt. The case has been designed to hold up to 25kg of debris, dependent on material being retained, which can be emptied into a suitable, segregated, waste skip and reused. |
| The lifespan for a loaded Containment Case is approximately three to four months, making it ideal for rigs and vessels which do not frequently come into port. The cases have been designed to accommodate most waste types commonly dealt with in the oil industry, with RBG offering bespoke cases for specialist applications involving acid and alkali solutions. |
| Doug Callum, RBG’s Group Operations Director adds: “The Containment Case offers operators and contractors clear advantages, evidenced in the growing number of orders we are receiving. We initially piloted the product on Nexen’s Buzzard platform, during their most recent shutdown, and found that the Containment Case performed exactly as we expected. We are in advanced discussions with other major operators and contractors.” |
| He concluded: “The Containment Case goes to show that not all innovations have to be large-scale, expensive or overly complicated. The key to successful innovation lies in having a strong degree of flexibility, together with a multi-disciplined understanding of the issues. The successful development of the Containment Case is a great example of RBG working with our clients to understand their issues, and then developing safe, efficient and effective solutions”.
